Deborah’s design of the two-tiered restaurant, which is set in
a historic Harvard clubhouse, has been acclaimed in local and national
press for its beauty, charm and originality. There are several complimentary
dining rooms, all light filled, vibrantly colored, and decoratively
painted (with countless stripes of gold and copper leaf and lavender
suede banquettes), to host events from 15 to 250. And with all the menus
throughout the restaurant, UpStairs on the Square prides itself on serving
hand-crafted, finely-tuned, artisanal dishes, using the best of seasonal
and local ingredients.

The Monday Club Bar
In the first floor wood-paneled Monday Club Bar, guests can enjoy
Deborah Hughes’ award-winning design as they enjoy an intimate,
club-like feeling and sweeping views of Winthrop Park. A fireplace
graces each end of the room, which is dominated by a curvaceous
rose-colored bar and several provocative chandeliers by the great
German lighting artist, Ingo Maurer. Like all the rooms in the restaurant,
the Monday Club Bar is designed to be flexible—perfect for
a cocktail party, it can also be an ideal room for a dinner or brunch
with a casual feel, or for a dance party. |

First Floor Zebra Room
The Zebra Room, named for its wild animal carpet, has glowing, high
gloss deep cerise walls and is lit with distinguished sconces as
well as two large and cheerful skylights that make it equally appealing
as a sun-filled daytime room, or for star-gazing at night. It is
also a flexible space, since it can be divided with a large decoratively
hand-painted set of screens to accommodate smaller parties. The
Zebra Room can host a dinner party for as few as 8 guests, or as
many as forty. It is also a perfect space to host a cocktail reception,
a wedding/baby shower or a festive birthday party. |

The Soirée Dining
Room/Jewel Box Bar
The gold and pink UpStairs main dining room (Soirée Room),
reminiscent of a glowing and colorful jewel-box-like supper club,
is lit with the flicker of working fireplace at each end of the
room. Distinguished by a small elegant bar with silver leaf “champagne
bubbles” as well as the famous, exuberant round windows facing
the park, this main dining room is clearly an heir to the celebratory
dining room at UpStairs at the Pudding, and its artisanal menu has
drawn raves and a rare 3 1/2 star review from the Boston Globe.
The crown of the Soiree Dining Room is the Jewel Box, a room that can
be created in the back third of the dining room by pulling closed a
set of French doors, whose wonderful silver leaf designs on the panes
provide discreet privacy for the room, while still allowing glimpses
of the dining room beyond.
The Entire Restaurant
On occasion, there is an opportunity
to reserve the entire restaurant for weddings or large private dinners,
using the Monday Club Bar and Zebra Room for a pre-dinner reception
and/or after-dinner bar and dance space, and the Soirée Dining
Room for seated or buffet dinner. It makes the ideal venue for a wedding,
large corporate dinner, or big family party. The entire space is also
sometimes used for a large cocktail/heavy hors d’oeuvre event – a
less formal wedding or a fundraising event. |
